Eastern Hills junior Layla Marie Harris wants to create Relay team
Eastern Hills junior Layla Marie Harris was interviewed today by NBC Channel 5 reporter Evan Anderson (an EHHS alum) for a story that is expected to air on Monday, Dec. 10.
Evan heard about Layla’s exceptional swimming ability and determination and wanted to do a Motivational Monday story about her situation.

EHHS is one of several Fort Worth ISD high schools that does not currently field a swimming team, but that didn’t deter Layla’s resolve to compete. In an arrangement between Fort Worth ISD Athletics, the Paschal H.S. swim team coach, EHHS girls’ Athletic Director Sonia Vangilder and Principal Katrina Smith, Layla works out with Paschal at the FWISD Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center aquatic facility and travels with them to compete in meets as a Highlander.
This arrangement is not uncommon under UIL rules for schools that have individual students who wish to compete in specific sports not offered by their home schools.
Layla not only competes for the Highlanders, she excels in other school activities and academically. When she isn’t swimming, she is in JROTC, AP/pre-AP classes, Girls Inc., works at the YMCA and does Camp Gladiator before school.
Her goal is to recruit three other swimmers from EHHS to form a girls’ relay team next year.
